Preston
North End recorded their forth win of the season over a youthful
Hull outfit. Hull made the trip across to Preston for the 2:00pm
kick-off.
All
the players managed to get the afternoon off to play in this
fixture, representing their home town club. It was Hull City
that made the better start to the match, keeping the whites
on their toes early on. Hull’s early pressure paid off
when they took the lead after 10 minutes.
The
Preston defence was stretched as the ball was played over the
top for the Hull forward to slot the ball home. This was a
real test of character for North End players, their heads didn’t
drop as the battled on. The visitors kept the pressure on the
Lilywhites, trying their best to catch Preston on the break
with the long ball over the top.
Preston
started to play some good football as they got a foot-hold
in the match. The pure persistence of the boys in white paid
off as the got their just rewards. Andy Dodwell was played
in on goal from the left. The nippy forward cruised past the
Hull backline to roll the ball into the back of the net.
North
End started to get on top of Hull City causing problems for
the visitors defence. As the half time whistle beckoned Preston
took the lead. North End’s second goal came from a defensive
mix up, the Hull centre back hacked at the ball to send it
high in the air. Andy ran onto the loose ball to round the
keeper for an easy tap-in.
The
second half was another intensive half, some crunching tackles
and some good football on show. The Preston backline and the
midfield were working well as a unit, almost creating the third
goal. Andy was set free down the left, only to be hacked down
in the box by. The Hull defender was sent off for the tackle
and discontent.
Pete
stepped up to take the resulting penalty, only for the Hull
keeper to pull off a great save down to his right.
PNE
manger Steve made some changes midway through the second half
to freshen things up. Preston eventually extended their lead
via top scorer Andy Dodwell. His pace and power out-ran the
Hull defenders to smash the ball home for his hat-trick goal.
Preston
almost got their forth goal when Ash was played in on goal
from the midfield. Ash controlled the ball well then released
his shot which came crashing off the bar. Confidence was running
through the team, all the lads heads held high. Chris in goal
was commanding his area, claiming the ball well after a succession
of Hull corners.
North
End went from strength to strength in the final quarter of
the match. Andy incredibly bagged his forth goal of the afternoon
when he dinked the ball over the onrushing Hull goalkeeper.
Hull
City went onto score a late consolation goal to make the score
4-2. The Hull forward went on a mazy run into the box, the
tired legs of the Preston players failed to get a foot on the
ball as in hit the net. A few more chances were created as
Hull we’re pushing for another goal. The match finished
with North End winning by two goals.
This
was an excellent performance from the Preston players. A well
earned victory drink was due.
